Perth & Margaret River

So I arrived in Perth and stayed with Stevie a friend of mine who moved over here about 8 years ago. He was delighted to meet Chom Poo Moo and for the first time in the 12 years he's known me I didn't have too much to say for the first day or so due to a cold in my chest!! Made up for it though later :-)

Life Guard training for the young kids at the beach - looks to energetic for me.

Turned out Shauna had a few days over in Perth when I was there - so Stevie acted as our personal tour guide and we were shown the highlights of the town. Shauna is playing with Ottis and Millie - Stevie's puppies.

Stevie took both Shauna and I out for a drive along the coast on his bike - slightly more comfortable than the bikes I was on in Asia.

Chom Poo Moo and I went along to the Perth mint and watched them pour $20,000 bar of gold - and we got to hold one (secured in a heavy duty case of course). Unfortunately I had to disappoint Chom Poo Moo when I told her this nugget wasn't real!!

The Aussies are hat daft!! Suppose they need to be given how hot it gets here.

Chom Poo Moo thinks the xmas tree here is slightly more tasteful than the one in Melbourne! Though I have to say it still does not feel like xmas to me - it is not so overdone here as at home - thankfully!!

Street entertainer plays the didgeredoo.

A shopping alley in Perth - could have been somewhere in York with all the tudor style buildings.

Views over Perth.

Cottesloe Beach - one of the many beaches around Perth.

Someone was brave enough to let me visit a chocolate factory -where they had free tasters mmmm!!! Luckily it was soo hot I decided that anything I bought would melt before I got it to a fridge - must remember a cool bag next time!Shauna and Stevie trying to look like this is their car!!

Shauna celebrated her birthday with us in Perth - whilst her twin Lee was back in Scotland.

Stevie was pretty exhausted after a few days of tour guiding Shauna and I around Perth!!

This street entertainer was hysterical and so un PC - he was swearing like a trouper whilst all these family groups sat and laugher - definetely more laid back than at home where he would probably have got the jail!! (do have very funny video clip but as I can't get it to upload you'll just have to wait till I get home).

Mini cars to get about Fremantle.

Fremantle Harbour.

Some of the houses around the Perth area are just obscenely huge!!

What movie do you think the people who live here are fans off????

A picnic in Kings Park before Shauna headed back to Melbourne.

A Gallah.

I headed down to Margaret River - 4 hours south of Perth for the weekend.
Unusual shaped shells that I found on the beach.

Surfers Point - wonder how it got it's name??

Chom Poo Moo decided she had to join in the fun and try surfing out - rather her than me!!

A Blue Tongued lizard - he wasn't too keen to get his photo taken as he tried to hide in the bushes then stuck his tongue out at me - cheeky!!!

One of the lovely beaches at Margaret River.

I had a few nice walks around Margaret River and the beach and found lots of beautiful wild flowers.

Ollie the Owl was the runt of his litter and the staff at Eagle Heritage Centre rescued him by hand feeding him which means he could never be released into the wild so he now has a job as an "Educational Bird'.

Lots of birds are rescued with injuries and cared for at the rescue centre - the aim is release as many as possible back into the wild but some would not be able to survive so get a permanent home here. Less than 2% of these birds of prey born in the wild live to breeding age - 68 % due to the natural 'survivor of the fitness' process the rest down to the damage people do to the environment such as using chemicals to kill insects that the birds then eat the insects.

Even the Koala's like to surf.

I caught up with my not so small nephew - Ben and his mum Marie whilst I was in Margaret River. Last time I saw Ben he was only ten and about 1/4 of the height!! But it was good to see them.

When I got back to Perth Stevie was on nights so I stayed with some friends of his - Cath, Liam and Jaimie. Liam and Jaimie are having a 'who has most coloured tongue' competition here :-)

Chom Poo Moo liked Jaimie and asked if she could share her bed for a few nights - she was delighted when we missed our flight to Alice Springs and got to stay an extra night.

Patch and Missie (Jaimie & Liam's pups).

Some colourful finches and the cheeky cockatiel!!

I had a great time in Perth and loved spending time with Stevie (who luckily had a few days off) and Shauna. Thanks to Stevie and his flatmate Shannon for the B & B facilities and of course to Cath and the kids for looking after me as well. Especially when I arrived with the cold it was great being somewhere where I could just relax and chill out.

Perth is a lovely city and really laid back and it was great to spend time with old friends and get away from the 'travellers chat' for a while'. Always good to get a view of a city from people who live there as well as I got to see so much more than I normally do (Stevie's chauffer and tour services are recommended). I can certainly see how so many people end up moving over here from the UK.
