The Great Ocean Road

First stop on the Great Ocean Road Trip was Tower Hill Resort where we got a little closer to the Kangaroo's. Found out lots of interesting facts about them too - they can have 3 Joey's at one time - one out and about, one in the pouch and carrying one in pregnancy which they won't drop until the one in the pouch is ready to go outdoors so to speak!!

My first Koala sighting - how cute are these. I had no idea that Koala's have a pouch for there young - it is open downwards (the opposite to the Kangaroo) and the newborn just crawls straight in!

The Great Ocean Road was built after World War 1 in part to provide employment for soldiers returning from the war and to help attract tourists to the area - that certainly worked. It follows the coast line on the South of Australia between Torquay and Warransmbool. And having spent a couple of days on a tour of this area I can certainly see why everyone who e-mailed me about coming to Australia told me to do this trip it is quite spectacular.

The Twelve Apostles - which are now only the 5 Apostles - at sunset. We watched the penguins waddle in from the see which was good but too small and far away for photo's!!We went back the following morning to get a view in daylight.

One of the helicopters that do tourists trips over the coastline - I decided to save my money on this occassion as it wasn't the nicest of days and you only got 10 minute trip but the guys who did it seemed to enjoy it anyway.

An Enchinda - and not a Enchilada as I kept calling him!!!

Some more of the beautiful coastline along the Great Ocean Road.

The never ending road.......

London Bridge - you used to be able to walk completely over this but a few years ago whilst some tourists were on it they heard the sound of cracking and all but two managed to run back to safety at the mainland. The other two got stuck on the outlying section of the rock. The news helicopters managed to get there before the rescue helicpoter and no one could work out why the couple were desperately hiding from the camera's covering their faces etc - you got it they were both married to other people and had taken a sick day to go play!! OOpps.....

A big bug landed on the bus window - also known as the crazy girl Tina!!

Chom Poo Moo enjoyed the trip down the coast as well.

I can't remember the name of this little beach we stopped at but it was lovely (though a little chilly) and the rocks in the cave were beautiful.

Maits Rest part of the rainforrest where we stopped for a walk around - massive old trees.

Feeding the seagulls on Apollo Beach where we stopped for lunch. When we stopped the sun was out and it was beautiful about 20 mins later the clouds rolled over and it started to pour again!!

Lorne Beacb - one of the popular weekend spots for Melbournites as it is only a couple of hours drive from the city.

Chom Poo Moo got very excited when she met some more traveller Mascots - especially the Pig and the Prawn!!

Anyone remember a kids TV show called "Round The Twist'??? I didn't but lots of others on the tour bus did and were quite excited to stop here which is where it was filmed.

The famous surfer haven of Bells Beach - where the final scene in the movie Point Break was set (though it wasn't actually filmed here!!). Chom Poo Moo was dissapointed there was no surfers out when we stopped.

Thanks to all those who told me not to miss the Great Ocean Road trip - I can see why - the scenery is scenery. I did a two day trip as I thought it would be too rushed to do the one day and I loved it - we went out West and did all the stops on the way back to Melbourne which meant we missed all the big one day tour buses and had most places to ourselves when we stopped. Though it rained on and off for the two days it was still amazing and anyone coming to Australia should certainly try and do this - I think hiring a car and doing it over a few more days would be even better though with a bus full of crazy Irish girls and a few others it was fun.
